How to Set Up eSIM on a Galaxy S21 (2026 Update): Install, Scan, Activate

This guide walks you through installing and activating an eSIM on a Samsung Galaxy S21, S21+, or S21 Ultra. Seven steps, about ten minutes. You'll find out where the "Add eSIM" menu actually lives, how to scan a UROCOMM QR code, which SIM settings make data flow instead of stall, and — the part most guides skip — exactly when to activate so your plan doesn't expire before you fly home.

Before you touch any settings

Four things to line up first:

• Your model number: SM-G991 (S21), SM-G996 (S21+), SM-G998 (S21 Ultra). The S21 FE is SM-G990 and takes the same menu path.
• Your software version. Go to Settings > Software update. Samsung's US firmware added the Add eSIM option with One UI 5 (Android 13), so anything older than that on a US carrier model may hide the menu entirely.
• Your UROCOMM QR code, open on a different screen — a laptop, tablet, or printed page. You cannot scan a QR code displayed on the same phone you're installing it on.
• A stable WiFi connection. This is the one step you don't want to do on airport WiFi.

Step 1 — Confirm your Galaxy S21 has eSIM turned on

Open Settings > Connections > SIM Manager.

If you see Add eSIM (sometimes written "Add eSIM or scan QR code"), you're good. If you don't see it, update the phone first and check again. Some carrier-locked units ship with eSIM disabled in firmware even though the hardware supports it.

Step 2 — Buy your plan and save the QR code

UROCOMM emails the QR code and activation details after purchase. Save the email offline — screenshot it or print it — because you'll want it at the airport, not in an inbox that needs data to load.

Warning: eSIM QR codes are generally single-use. Once scanned successfully, that code is spent. If the scan fails halfway, don't keep retrying blindly — email service@urocomm.com with your order number.

Step 3 — Start the download on WiFi

Connect to WiFi, then go:

Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > Add eSIM > Scan QR code

Some One UI builds label the last option "Scan QR code from service provider." Same thing.

Step 4 — Scan and confirm

Point the camera at the UROCOMM QR code on your other screen. The phone reads it and shows the carrier profile name. Tap Add or Confirm, then wait.

Expect the download to take a couple of minutes. If it's still spinning after five, cancel, reconnect to a stronger WiFi network, and try again. Not all failed downloads burn the QR code, but some do — which is why the WiFi part matters.

Step 5 — Label the new line

Samsung asks you to name the profile. Be specific: "UROCOMM Japan" beats "Line 2" when you're jet-lagged and staring at a settings menu in a train station.

Back in SIM Manager you'll now see two entries — your physical nano-SIM and the UROCOMM eSIM.

Step 6 — Point mobile data at the eSIM

This is where most people get stuck. Signal bars appear, nothing loads, and the phone is secretly still using the home SIM.

• Set Mobile data to the UROCOMM eSIM line.
• Set Calls and SMS to your home SIM if you want to keep your normal number reachable.
• Toggle Mobile data ON for the UROCOMM line.
• Toggle Data roaming ON for the UROCOMM line.

That roaming toggle worries people. For a prepaid travel eSIM it's the normal setting — the eSIM registers on a partner network abroad, and the toggle is what lets it connect. It is not the same as roaming on your home contract.

One more limit worth knowing: the Galaxy S21 holds one physical SIM plus one eSIM. Not two eSIMs at once — that arrived with later Galaxy generations. If you need two eSIM profiles live simultaneously, look at a newer device.

Step 7 — Activate at your destination, not at home

Here's the rule: install the eSIM profile before you travel, but activate the plan only when you arrive.

Installing is fine at home on WiFi — that just puts the profile on the phone. What you avoid is letting the eSIM line switch on and register on a network while you're still in your home country. That connection can start your plan's validity period on day one, so a 10-day plan bought a week early could be down to three days by the time you actually land. It can also log roaming on networks you never meant to use.

Keep the UROCOMM line disabled (or the phone in airplane mode with only WiFi on) until you're on the ground. Then, once you're through arrivals, switch off airplane mode and enable the UROCOMM line. Airport WiFi or hotel WiFi is the safest place to do this — you have a fallback connection while the eSIM finds a tower.

Troubleshooting

No "Add eSIM" option anywhere. Almost always firmware or carrier lock. Update to the newest available One UI, then check again. If it's still absent, your carrier blocks it — see the Samsung Galaxy eSIM installation guide for model-by-model notes, or switch to a hotspot.

"Couldn't activate your eSIM" during setup. Usually a weak WiFi connection mid-download. Reconnect and retry once. If it fails twice, contact service@urocomm.com — you may need a replacement QR code.

eSIM installed but no internet. Nine times out of ten the data line is still set to your home SIM. Go back to Step 6 and check both the mobile data selection and the roaming toggle.

Signal bars but nothing loads, home and abroad. Turn airplane mode on for 10 seconds, then off. This forces a fresh network registration. Still stuck? Restart the phone.

Worked yesterday, dead today. Check whether your plan's data allowance ran out. Prepaid eSIMs stop rather than throttle in most cases. A top-up link in your UROCOMM email sorts it.

FAQ

Can I use two eSIMs at the same time on a Galaxy S21? No. The S21 supports one nano-SIM and one eSIM active together. Storing more than one eSIM profile is possible, but only one can be switched on at a time. For true dual-eSIM, you need a newer Galaxy.

Will installing an eSIM delete my physical SIM or my contacts? No. The eSIM is an additional line. Your physical SIM stays exactly as it was, and contacts stored on the phone or in your Google account are untouched.

Do I need to remove the eSIM when I get home? Not required, but tidy. Turn the UROCOMM line off in SIM Manager so your phone stops trying to register it, and delete the profile if you're done with it entirely. Deleting is permanent — the profile can't be re-downloaded from that QR code.
