How to Set Up eSIM on iPhone XR: Step-by-Step (QR Code Method)
You can install an eSIM on the iPhone XR in about 4 minutes — no store visit, no plastic card, no paperclip. This tutorial walks you through the QR code route, which is the one that works on every iPhone XR regardless of whether it's running iOS 12 or iOS 18. You'll also get the activation timing rule that stops your plan from burning out before you land, plus the fixes for the three error messages XR owners hit most often.
First, what the iPhone XR can and can't do
Apple shipped the XR in 2018, and it has held on through seven major iOS versions — iOS 12 up to iOS 18. That's a lot of menu changes, which is why half the eSIM guides online show buttons your phone doesn't have.
Three things to know before you tap anything:
- One eSIM at a time. The XR runs two lines total: your physical nano-SIM plus one eSIM. It cannot run two eSIMs simultaneously. If you need two travel lines live at once, that's iPhone 13 and later.
- The menu name changed. On iOS 16, 17, and 18 you'll see Add eSIM. On iOS 12–15 the same button reads Add Cellular Plan. Same function.
- Your phone must be carrier-unlocked. Check under Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. It needs to say "No SIM restrictions."
UROCOMM plans are data-only, so there's no phone number to port and nothing happens to your iMessage or WhatsApp. Keep your home SIM in the tray for calls and texts, and let the eSIM handle data. If your phone turns out not to support eSIM at all, check the compatibility rundown in our eSIM guides before you buy anything.
Install now, activate later — this part matters
UROCOMM splits the job in two. Scanning the QR installs the profile. It does not start your data allowance. The clock starts when the line first registers on a network at your destination.
So: install at home, on your own WiFi, the night before you fly. Then toggle the line on when you land — airport WiFi or hotel WiFi is fine for the first connection. Activate too early and you can start the validity period days before you leave, which is how people end up with a dead plan on day one of a two-week trip. And if you activate a travel eSIM while still at home, some networks will register the line as roaming while you're sitting on your sofa.
Note the QR code itself is single-use. Don't scan it into a friend's phone "to test it."
Step-by-step: install eSIM on iPhone XR
Step 1. Confirm the phone is unlocked and running iOS 12 or later at Settings > General > About. Note the iOS version — it decides which button name you'll see in Step 4.
Step 2. Buy your plan and open the QR code on a second screen — a laptop, a tablet, or a printed page. Your XR's camera can't scan a code that's displayed on the XR itself.
Step 3. Connect the XR to WiFi. The profile download needs a data connection that isn't the line you're installing.
Step 4. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM. On iOS 12–15 the path is Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan.
Step 5. Tap Use QR Code. Point the rear camera at the code and hold still for 2–3 seconds.
Step 6. If the camera won't focus or the code is on the same phone, tap Enter Details Manually instead and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your order email. This is the fallback that saves most failed installs.
Step 7. When the plan appears, tap Continue, then label it — "UROCOMM USA" or "UROCOMM Japan" works. Labels matter once you have two lines in the same menu.
Step 8. Set your defaults. Under Cellular Data, pick your UROCOMM line. Under Default Voice Line, keep your home SIM. Turn off "Allow Cellular Data Switching" so your home carrier never picks up a data session abroad.
Step 9. Now the roaming toggles — and these go in opposite directions. Turn Data Roaming OFF on your home line. Turn it ON for the UROCOMM line, because the travel eSIM connects through local partner networks and needs roaming enabled to do it. That's normal, not a red flag.
The whole install takes 9 steps and typically 3–5 minutes. If you're on iOS 18 and something looks different, our iPhone 15 activation walkthrough shows the same flow on the newer menu layout.
Turning it on when you arrive
Land, find WiFi, then:
- Settings > Cellular > tap your UROCOMM line.
- Toggle Turn On This Line to green.
- Wait 1–5 minutes. UROCOMM doesn't publish a fixed activation SLA, but most lines register within that window once local coverage is available.
- Open a browser and load any page to confirm data is flowing.
Installing before you go and enabling on arrival is the pattern that keeps your plan window aligned with your trip. Heading to the States? The USA unlimited eSIM is the one to install. Two weeks in Tokyo? Grab the Japan eSIM. Multi-country Europe trip? The Europe unlimited data eSIM covers the whole route with one profile — worth it on the XR, since you can only hold one eSIM line active anyway.
Troubleshooting
"Add eSIM" is greyed out or missing. Usually a carrier lock, or a refurbished XR with a replaced logic board. Check Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock first. If it says "SIM locked," contact your carrier — no eSIM will install until that's lifted.
"Invalid QR code" or the camera won't scan. Use Enter Details Manually. The SM-DP+ address is long and easy to mistype: copy it from the email rather than reading it off a printed page.
"Cellular Plan Cannot Be Added." The profile is already on the phone, or the QR has been used once. Don't keep retrying — email service@urocomm.com with your order number and they'll issue a fresh installation code.
eSIM installed but "No Service" after landing. Three checks in order: is the line toggled on, is Data Roaming on for the travel line, and is Cellular Data pointed at the UROCOMM line rather than your home SIM. Nine times out of ten it's the third one.
You tapped "Delete eSIM." That's permanent — the profile is gone and the QR won't work twice. UROCOMM support can re-issue it, but not instantly at 11 pm in a foreign arrivals hall. Treat that delete button like a factory reset.
FAQ
Does the iPhone XR support dual eSIM? No. It supports dual SIM — one nano-SIM plus one eSIM active together — but not two eSIMs running at once. If you genuinely need two live eSIM lines, you're looking at an iPhone 13 or newer.
Will installing an eSIM wipe my contacts or my home number? No. The eSIM profile only adds a data line. Your contacts, photos, and existing nano-SIM stay exactly where they are. Remove the physical SIM and your home number stops working — so leave it in.
Can I install the eSIM weeks before my trip? Yes, and UROCOMM recommends it. Installing doesn't start the validity period. Just leave the travel line toggled off until you're at your destination, or you'll be paying for days you're not using.
Your next move
Do the install tonight, while you're on your own WiFi and your order email is still at the top of your inbox — not at 6 am in a departure lounge with 4% battery. Pick your destination plan from the UROCOMM eSIM collection, run through the 9 steps above, then leave the line switched off.
One last thing: if your trip involves two devices — a work phone that has to stay on your home number plus a personal phone — the XR's single-eSIM limit gets awkward fast. A portable travel WiFi hotspot keeps both phones online from one connection and sidesteps the whole dual-line problem.
