How to Set Up eSIM on Pixel 4 (2026 Update)

The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL can run a UROCOMM travel eSIM just fine — but the setup path isn't identical to what you'll see on a Pixel 8 or Pixel 9. The Pixel 4 line stopped at Android 13, so the menus say something slightly different. This guide covers the exact taps, the right moment to activate your plan, and the errors Pixel 4 owners actually run into.

Before you start

Three things, and you're ready:

  • An unlocked Pixel 4 or Pixel 4 XL. If you bought it through a carrier, confirm it's SIM-unlocked before you buy any plan.
  • Your UROCOMM eSIM QR code. It lands in your email after purchase. Open it on a laptop, a tablet, or a friend's phone — not on the Pixel 4 itself.
  • A WiFi connection. The eSIM profile downloads over the internet. Until it's installed and active, your Pixel 4 has no mobile data of its own.

One Pixel 4 quirk worth knowing upfront: this phone supports one physical nano-SIM plus one eSIM, and that's it. Two eSIMs at the same time isn't possible on this hardware. If you need both your home line and a travel line live, keep your home SIM in the tray and put UROCOMM on the eSIM.

Step-by-step: installing the eSIM

Step 1. Connect the Pixel 4 to WiFi. Home, hotel, airport — anything stable.

Step 2. Open Settings and tap .

Step 3. Tap Network & internet, then tap SIMs. [Screenshot: SIMs screen showing the existing physical SIM card entry.]

Step 4. Tap Add SIM (on some Android 13 builds it appears as a + icon in the corner). [Screenshot: "Add SIM" button under the list of active SIMs.]

Step 5. Choose Download a SIM instead? and tap Next. [Screenshot: the two-option dialog — "Download a SIM instead?" and "Get a physical SIM".]

Step 6. Tap Scan QR code, then point the camera at the QR code on your other screen. Give it a moment — the phone needs the whole square in frame. [Screenshot: camera viewfinder with a yellow frame around the QR code.]

Step 7. Let the profile download. This usually takes 1–3 minutes. Don't lock the screen, close Settings, or power off. [Screenshot: progress spinner reading "Downloading your eSIM".]

Step 8. Name the line. Type something you'll recognize later — "UROCOMM Japan" or "UROCOMM USA" beats "eSIM 1". [Screenshot: the nickname field with a keyboard open.]

Step 9. Set your defaults. Choose the UROCOMM line for mobile data, and leave calls and SMS on your physical SIM. That keeps your regular number working for texts and bank codes.

That's it — nine steps, and eight of them are taps.

The activation timing rule (this is where plans get wasted)

Installing the profile and activating the plan are two different events. Install it at home, before you fly. Do not activate it yet.

Most travel eSIM plans — UROCOMM's included — start counting the validity period the moment the line first registers on a network. If you turn the line on in your living room and it grabs a local tower, your 7-day plan can be half gone before you clear security. There can also be roaming charges if the line attaches to a non-covered network back home.

So after step 9, go back to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > UROCOMM, and toggle that line off. Leave it off. Your plan sits there, dormant, costing you nothing.

Then: land, clear immigration, join the airport or hotel WiFi, and toggle the line back on. First connection in your destination is what starts the clock. Give it 2–5 minutes to lock onto a network — UROCOMM doesn't publish a fixed activation-completion time, since it depends on the local carrier.

The same logic applies to whichever plan you load. A USA unlimited eSIM for a two-week trip, a Japan eSIM for a Tokyo run, or a Europe eSIM with unlimited data for a multi-country route — all install the same way on the Pixel 4. Only the activation moment changes.

Troubleshooting

"I don't see 'Add SIM' or 'Set up eSIM' anywhere." Two usual causes. First, the phone is carrier-locked — that's the most common one on a 2019 handset bought through a carrier. Second, you're offline, so Android hides the option. Reconnect to WiFi and check again. If the menu is still missing after that, your unit is locked; you'll need the carrier to unlock it, or switch to a portable WiFi hotspot that covers 110 countries.

"The QR code won't scan." Turn your other screen's brightness all the way up, kill the glare, and hold the phone 15–20 cm away. Screenshot photos taken at an angle are the usual culprit. If it still fails, email service@urocomm.com for a reissued QR code — don't start deleting things.

"The eSIM installed but I have no internet." Check three settings in this order: mobile data is pointed at the UROCOMM line, data roaming is ON for that line (travel eSIMs need it), and your physical SIM's data is OFF so the phone doesn't keep defaulting back to it. Then restart the phone.

"Can I delete the profile and scan the code again?" Careful — that's the irreversible move in this whole process. eSIM QR codes are typically single-use, so a profile you delete may not be re-installable with the same code. If something's wrong, contact support before deleting anything.

"My Pixel 4 shows 'No service' on the eSIM line." Go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > UROCOMM > Automatically select network and turn it off, then manually pick from the list. This clears most tower-registration hiccups on older Pixel hardware.

FAQ

Can I use two eSIMs at once on a Pixel 4? No. The Pixel 4 supports one physical SIM and one eSIM together, not two eSIM profiles running side by side. If both lines need to be eSIM, you'll want newer hardware — see our eSIM-compatible phones guide.

Does the Pixel 4 support 5G on an eSIM plan? The Pixel 4 is a 4G LTE phone. A 5G UROCOMM plan will still work, but you'll be on LTE speeds — that's a hardware limit, not a plan limit.

How long does the whole setup take? Counting the download, most people finish in under 10 minutes. The scanning step itself is under a minute.

What if my Pixel 4 is broken or I'm switching to a Samsung? The install flow differs a bit on Samsung hardware. We've got a separate walkthrough for installing an eSIM on Samsung Galaxy phones, and one for activating UROCOMM eSIM on iPhone 15 if you're travelling with a mixed-device group.

What to do next

Grab your plan, install the profile tonight while you're still on home WiFi, then toggle the line off and forget about it until you land. Running low mid-trip? You can top up your UROCOMM eSIM data plan without buying a new profile.
