How to Switch Between eSIM and Physical SIM on Your Phone

Your travel eSIM is installed. Your home SIM is still in the tray. Now your phone has two lines and you need to tell it which one does what. This tutorial covers switching the default data, voice, and SMS lines on iOS 17/18 and Android 13/14, plus how to keep your home number alive for bank codes and 2FA texts. Nine steps, about three minutes of tapping.

Before you start: three numbers worth knowing

  • Two lines, three settings. A dual-SIM phone keeps two lines active at once, but you choose separately: default data line, default voice line, default SMS line. People mix these up and then wonder why calls still route through their home carrier.
  • iOS 16 or later is where most of these menus settled. On iOS 18, you can also flip the cellular data line straight from Control Center. Most Android phones on Android 13/14 use Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
  • Install ≠ activate. Install the UROCOMM profile at home on WiFi. Activate the plan only when you land. Activation starts the validity period, and doing it early can burn days — or trigger roaming charges — before your trip even begins.

Part 1 — Install the eSIM profile (at home, on WiFi)

1. Add the profile on iPhone. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM, then scan the QR code from your UROCOMM order email or tap Enter Details Manually at the bottom of the screen to type the SM-DP+ address and activation code.

2. Add the profile on Android. Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM and scan the same QR code. Samsung menus read slightly differently by model — if your Galaxy shows a different path, the walkthrough in How to Install eSIM on Samsung Galaxy Phones covers the variations, including the Galaxy S20.

3. Label both lines. Rename the new line something obvious like "UROCOMM Japan" instead of "Secondary." On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > tap the line > Cellular Plan Label. You will thank yourself at 11 pm in a hotel lobby.

A note on timing: a Japan eSIM for a two-week trip gets installed the week before you fly, not the month before. If your trip is still open-ended, look at the Asia regional eSIM so one profile covers several borders.

Part 2 — Set the default lines

4. Make the eSIM your data line. iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data, then pick your UROCOMM plan. Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Mobile data, then select the eSIM.

5. Keep your home SIM as the voice and SMS line. This is the whole point of dual-line management. iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Default Voice Line > choose your home number. Android: SIM manager > Calls preference and SMS preference > home SIM. Your physical SIM stays on for incoming calls and one-time passcodes while the eSIM carries the data load.

6. Turn off data roaming on the home line. iPhone: Settings > Cellular > tap your home line > Data Roaming off. Android: SIMs > home SIM > Roaming off. While you are there, switch off Allow Cellular Data Switching on iPhone — that feature can quietly borrow data from your home line when the eSIM signal drops, which is exactly how people come home to a roaming bill.

⚠️ Warning: tapping Delete eSIM removes the profile permanently. It is not a toggle. If you delete a UROCOMM profile by accident, you need a reissue from support, so do your line switching in the Cellular/SIM menu, never in the delete screen.

Part 3 — Activate on arrival

7. Land, connect to airport or hotel WiFi, then activate. Turn the UROCOMM line on, and set Data Roaming to ON for the eSIM line specifically. Travel eSIMs roam onto local partner networks, so this is expected and does not bill you extra. Activation usually completes within 1–2 minutes once the profile registers on a local network. Same rule everywhere: a USA unlimited eSIM bought for a New York trip should sit dormant until you clear immigration.

8. Confirm the data line stuck. Open a browser and load a heavy page. If nothing loads, check that Cellular Data is still pointed at the eSIM — some Android phones reset the data preference after a restart.

9. Switch back when you get home. Set the physical SIM as the data line again, turn the eSIM line off, and keep the profile stored for your next trip. There is no need to delete it.

Troubleshooting

"Add eSIM" is missing or greyed out. Your phone is likely carrier-locked or simply does not support eSIM. Check the model list in eSIM Compatible Phones. If it is an older iPhone — an SE 2nd gen, for example — the setup steps differ slightly; see How to Set Up eSIM on iPhone SE (2nd gen). No eSIM support at all? A portable travel WiFi hotspot gives you the same data without touching your SIM tray.

The eSIM shows bars but no internet. Nine times out of ten the default data line reverted to the physical SIM. Re-check step 4. Then confirm Data Roaming is on for the eSIM line — off is the default, and off means no data abroad.

Your home carrier is charging roaming anyway. Data Roaming on the home line is still enabled, or Allow Cellular Data Switching is on. Both let the phone fall back to your home plan when the eSIM signal weakens. Turn both off.

Verification codes stopped arriving. The home line must stay enabled for SMS. Check that the SMS default is your physical SIM, that the line is not turned off, and that you have signal — codes arrive over the home network, not the eSIM. If your bank sends codes to an app instead, log in once on hotel WiFi to re-authenticate.

The plan expired before your trip ended. Almost always early activation. Contact service@urocomm.com with your order number; support can confirm when the profile first registered on a network.

FAQ

Does switching the default data line turn off my other line? No. Both lines stay registered. You are only choosing which one carries data — calls and texts still arrive on the other line.

Can I use my home number for calls while the travel eSIM handles data? Yes, that is the standard setup. Just remember that answering a call on your home line abroad may bill you at your carrier's roaming voice rate. Receiving SMS codes is normally free.

Is it safe to keep the eSIM installed between trips? Yes. A dormant profile costs nothing and starts no clock. iPhone 13 and later can store eight or more eSIM profiles with two active at a time, so you can keep a few destinations ready.

The setting people forget is step 6. Turning off data roaming on your home SIM — and switching off Allow Cellular Data Switching — takes ten seconds and prevents the most common post-trip surprise on a phone bill. Do that before you board, then activate only after you land.
