How to Troubleshoot Common Travel eSIM Connection Issues

You've landed, the eSIM is installed, and your phone shows… nothing. Or one bar and a spinning wheel. Good news: most travel eSIM failures are settings problems, not dead plans, and you can usually fix them in under five minutes. Below are eight steps that cover no signal, no internet, and slow data on both iPhone and Android — plus what to do when none of it works.

Before Anything Else: Install Early, Activate on Arrival

Do not activate your plan at home. UROCOMM's rule of thumb is simple: install the eSIM profile before you travel, but activate the plan only when you reach your destination. Activation often starts the validity period, and on some plans an early activation can also trigger roaming charges while the profile hunts for a network it can't find.

The safe window is after you land — airport WiFi or hotel WiFi is fine for the final toggle. If you already scanned the QR code days ago and your plan's days are ticking away, that's not a connection fault. Check the start date in your order email before you spend an hour on APN settings.

The 8-Step Fix (Work in Order, Stop When Data Flows)

Step 1 — Confirm the eSIM is actually switched on. - iPhone: Settings > Cellular > tap the travel line > Turn On This Line. - Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > tap the eSIM > Use SIM.

Step 2 — Turn on Data Roaming for the travel eSIM only. This is the single most common cause of "eSIM no internet." Your phone registers on a visiting network, and with roaming off it refuses the connection. - iPhone: Settings > Cellular > [travel line] > Data Roaming. - Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > [travel eSIM] > Roaming.

Keep roaming off on your home line. That's how people come home to a surprise bill.

Step 3 — Tell the phone which line carries data. - iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > pick the travel eSIM. Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching while you travel. - Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Mobile data > select the travel eSIM.

Step 4 — Restart the phone. Full power off, wait 30 seconds, power back on. Activation usually completes within 1–2 minutes after a restart.

Step 5 — Toggle airplane mode for 30 seconds. It forces the modem to re-register with the local tower. Cheap, fast, works more often than it should.

Step 6 — Pick the network manually. - iPhone: Settings > Cellular > [travel line] > Network Selection > turn Automatic off, then choose a carrier. - Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > [travel eSIM] > Carrier > search networks.

This matters because your phone often latches onto the first network it sees, which may be a weak partner network. If you're in Toronto on the Canada Travel eSIM and sitting at one bar, a manual switch to another listed carrier can fix it in seconds.

Step 7 — Check the APN. - iPhone: Settings > Cellular > [travel line] > Cellular Data Network > APN. - Android: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > [travel eSIM] > Access Point Names.

Most UROCOMM plans auto-fill the APN. If the field is blank, the correct value is in your order email. Type it, then restart. Change nothing else on that screen.

Step 8 — Reset network settings (last resort). - iPhone: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. - Android: Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.

Warning: this wipes saved WiFi passwords and Bluetooth pairings. It does not delete your eSIM. You'll need to re-add your hotel WiFi afterward.

These steps are identical on iOS 17 and iOS 18, and on Android 14 and Android 15 — the menu names barely move. Most people are back online by step 3.

Troubleshooting: What Each Symptom Actually Means

No signal at all, or "No SIM" / "Searching…" Either the line is off (step 1), the phone is carrier-locked, or you've left the plan's coverage area. First-time eSIM users should confirm their handset is on the supported list — see eSIM compatible phones for the models that work.

Bars showing, but no internet Ninety percent of the time it's one of three things: roaming off on the travel line, the data line still set to your home SIM, or a missing APN. Re-run steps 2, 3 and 7 in that order.

Slow speeds Check two things before blaming the network. First, whether you're parked on a congested band — lock the phone to LTE in settings if 5G is weak. Second, your plan's high-speed allowance: prepaid plans differ by destination, and the amount is listed on the product page, for example the Vietnam eSIM page for that route. Once a daily high-speed bucket runs out, speeds drop by design, not by fault.

Worked yesterday, dead today You likely crossed a border. Travel eSIMs are country- or region-specific. Check the coverage list in your order email; a regional plan covers the neighbours, a single-country plan doesn't.

The eSIM disappeared after a software update or a phone swap Profiles don't always migrate. Do not delete anything yet — eSIM QR codes are often single-use. Email UROCOMM support first (details below).

FAQ

Should I delete the eSIM and reinstall it if nothing works? No. Deletion is the one irreversible step in this whole process. Try every other fix first, and contact support before you remove the profile.

Do I really need roaming on for a local plan? Yes, in almost every case. Your phone is a guest on a local network, and the roaming switch is what allows that connection on iOS and most Android builds. Samsung labels it in Connections > Mobile networks.

My phone doesn't support eSIM at all. What now? Pick up a portable WiFi hotspot instead — see mobile WiFi devices and our WiFi setup guides. It's also the better call if you're travelling with kids or a laptop.

Can I keep using my home SIM for calls while the eSIM handles data? Yes. Set the travel eSIM as the data line and leave your home line active for SMS — just keep data roaming off on the home line.

When to Contact UROCOMM Support

Still stuck after step 8? Email service@urocomm.com with four things: your order number, your exact phone model, a screenshot of the eSIM settings screen, and a screenshot of the manual carrier list. Support can check the profile status on their side, which you can't see from the handset — and they can tell you whether the plan has actually started its validity window yet.

If you're troubleshooting before you fly, start with how-to guides and browse eSIM plans once your device checks out.

The fix is usually one toggle, and it lives in the same place on almost every phone: Data Roaming, on the travel line, not the home line. Turn it on while you're still standing in the airport on free WiFi, before you walk out to the taxi queue.
